AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE NOMINATIONS AND NEW INFORMATION

The Awards for Excellence, highly esteemed by art curators everywhere, is the only award of its kind by which curators directly honor the work of their colleagues. Through the Awards, launched in 2004, the AAMC has honored over 120 curators for their outstanding work in catalogues, essays, articles, and exhibitions.  Learn more about the Awards for Excellence here

At the 2016 Conference, out of nearly a 100 nominations, 15 curators were selected for their achievements in varying fields of research.  At the same Conference, we launched a formal Awards ceremony reception, which was held at The Menil Collection. The widely popular event welcomed 300 individuals celebrating curatorial achievements, and quickly went viral across the museum community.

In 2017, on the evening of Sunday, May 7 when the majority of our attendees have arrived, we will host our Awards for Excellence Celebration at a prominent local museum in NYC.

NEW
New to this year’s process is a category for Digital Publications or E-Publications. In establishing this category the Board of Trustees, Executive Director, current and most recent Award Committee Chair, and the Awards for Excellence Committee believed the curatorial voice in e-publications should be honored.  This category was developed to answer the growing nominations possible in this format and is solely for book-or-publication entries, not apps or virtual exhibitions. They also must have been created intentionally only for the digital realm and be accessible solely in digital form (i.e., not a pdf of a book). In addition, the nominations are expected to have been  created and/or designed to take advantage of digital technologies, such as, interactive material, zoomable images, or responsive design for multiple devices.

In addition, to be more inclusive of more organizational operating budgets, we have further divided the nomination categories for Exhibitions and Catalogs/Publications (printed). This year Awards in these areas will be given out to work within organizations with an operating budgets under $2 million, between $2 - $6 million, between $6 - $15 million, between $15 - $30 million and over $30 million.

PROCESS
Nominations for all Awards must be made by a current AAMC member and can only be submitted electronically.  Self-nominations are encouraged and welcomed. A nominator may submit more than one nomination in one or many categories. The nominated curators, should they be selected as an Awardee, must be or become an AAMC current members. Therefore all nominees must be eligible for membership, if you have concerns about this, please contact the AAMC offices.

Attendance at the Conference is not required to receive an Award, but we do hope that Awardees will make every effort to participate.
