AAMC & AAMC Foundation Announces its 2017 Conference & Annual Meeting

New York, December 13, 2016 - The Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC) & AAMC Foundation has announced sessions, venues, and Keynote Dialogues for its 2017 Annual Conference & Meeting, scheduled for May 6-9, 2017 in New York City. Building on the momentum generated by the Association's 15th Anniversary Conference held in Houston, TX, last May, the 2017 Conference features a compelling itinerary of Keynote Dialogues and sessions, as well as Roundtables, Shoptalks, weekend tours, a Members' Reception, and Awards for Excellence Reception. AAMC is honored to welcome Sotheby's as the Lead Conference Sponsor. 

Addressing topics of access and inclusion over two days of sessions, the 2017 Conference will feature two Keynote Dialogues: Monica O. Montgomery, Founding Director & Curator, Museum of Impact, and Tanya M. Odom, Global Diversity & Inclusion & Education Consultant & Executive Coach on Monday, May 8; and  Hank Willis Thomas, Artist, and Deborah Willis, University Professor & Chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University on Tuesday, May 9. 

The Conference's Monday sessions will be held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, co-hosted in part by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, with a welcome from Thomas P. Campbell, Director & CEO, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, with Tuesday held at the Brooklyn Museum, co-hosted in part by the Brooklyn Museum, with a welcome from Anne Pasternak, Shelby White & Leon Levy Director, Brooklyn Museum. Sessions include Access, Ableism and Dis/ability in Curatorial Practice, organized and moderated by Amanda Cachia, Independent Curator; Collections as Assets for Inclusive Dialogue, organized and moderated by Diana Jocelyn Greenwold, Assistant Curator of American Art, Portland Museum of Art, Portland, Maine and Jennifer Komar Olivarez, Head of Exhibition Planning and Strategy, Interim Curator of the Purcell-Cutts House, Minneapolis Institute of Arts; From “Reimagining Feminism” to “Reimagining the Museum”: Curatorial Strategies for Revising and Renewing Institutional Histories, organized by Carmen Hermo, Assistant Curator, Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Brooklyn Museum and moderated by Catherine Morris, Sackler Family Curator, Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Brooklyn Museum; and Navigating the Work-Life Balance, organized and moderated by Alexandra Schwartz, Independent Curator. 

AAMC's newly formed Diversity Task Force will again present a session, following the Task Force's provoking discussion at AAMC's 15th Anniversary Conference. The discussion Start Where You Are: Acknowledge Implicit Bias as a First Step toward More Diverse and Inclusive Museum Initiatives, is organized and moderated by Tuliza Fleming, Ph.D.,Museum Curator, National Museum of African American History and Culture, Smithsonian Institution.

In addition to two full days of Conference sessions, AAMC will welcome members to its annual Awards for Excellence Reception, co-hosted by the International Center of Photography at the ICP Museum on Sunday, May 7th. On Monday evening, members will gather for AAMC's Annual Members' Reception, co-hosted in part by Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and sponsored by Lead Conference and Members’ Reception Sponsor, Sotheby’s. 

New to the Conference schedule are Shoptalks, a set of short case study presentations related to different curatorial topics, with this year's focus on display solutions. The 2017 speakers will give an informal five-minute talk, highlighting interesting display solutions related to a specific artwork that has been on view at their institution within the last two years. This unique format will allow presenters to discuss how presentation or design impacts viewing and interpreting art in a concise format.

Annual Conference & Meeting

The Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC) hosts an Annual Conference & Meeting, attracting over 400 curators and guests from across the U.S. and Canada. It is the only conference of its kind where are curators from every discipline and field meet to discuss important issues facing the profession. The multi-day event includes mentorship opportunities, networking, professional development workshops, panel discussions, receptions, award announcements, receptions at host city cultural institutions, and a full membership meeting. The Annual Conference & Meeting, open to all members, fosters the profession's cohesiveness by addressing issues of national relevance, by assisting in professional development, and by promoting dialogue and exchange among curators.

 

Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC) & AAMC Foundation 

Founded in 2001, the Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC) has over 1,300 members from over 400 institutions around the globe.  The mission of the Association of Art Museum Curators is to support and promote the work of visual art curators in the non-profit sector by creating opportunities for networking, collaboration, professional development, and advancement.  In support of these aims, the AAMC Foundation seeks to heighten public understanding of the curator's role in art museums & other non-profit models through professional development programs, awards, and grants.  By providing a dynamic forum in which to share ideas and encourage professional development, the Association of Art Museum Curators continues to attract membership, increasing its visibility and importance to the larger arts community. 

AAMC & AAMC Foundation are the only organizations offering professional development and career navigation to the non-profit curatorial profession, and we do so on a global platform.  We achieve this by offering valuable programming, including providing standards for best curatorial practices and ethics; advocating for the profession; convening and creating effective networks; initiating diversity efforts; and mentoring and inspiring future curators—across all borders.  In order to meet our expansive goals, the organizations are working to strengthen alliances, expand funding, and grow services for our members.   All of the activities of AAMC & AAMC Foundation strive to be inclusive and representative of diversity: across self-identifications (by nation, gender, creed, race), fields of expertise, types of institutional mission, and regional position. 

Individual membership within AAMC is open to art curators, regardless of geographic location, as we accept international members, with direct responsibility for works of art at non-profit organization. Membership is open to curators working in any field and with all levels of experience, In addition, art curators without direct non-profit art organization affiliation, not working in the commercial sector, are welcome to apply for membership, and should see our membership application for additional information needed for review by the membership committee and AAMC Executive Director.
