Articulating Priorities for Collections for Mentees

In this 60-minute webinar, the curatorial staff of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts – Anna O. Marley, Curator of Historical American Art and Jodi Throckmorton, Curator of Contemporary Art – discussed the basic elements of and best practices in museum collection building. Specific topics included: creating a collection plan, delineating collection priorities, setting acquisition goals; and additional examples drawn from both Marley and Throckmorton’s experience with strengthening a renowned historical collection while simultaneously building a formidable contemporary collection.

Anna O. Marley, Curator of Historical American Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts

Marley joined PAFA in March of 2009 as the Curator of Historical American Art. Marley is a scholar of American art and material culture from the colonial era to 1945 and holds a BA in Art History from Vassar College, an MA in Museum Studies from the University of Southern California and a Ph.D. from the University of Delaware, where she completed a dissertation on 18th- and early 19th-century landscape paintings and their display in international merchant’s domestic interiors. At PAFA, Marley has curated the exhibition Public Treasures/Private Visions: Hudson River School Masterworks from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Private Collections (2009-2010) Virgins, Soldiers, Angels, and Saints: Violet Oakley's Religious Art from the PAFA Collection (2010) and co-curated, with her colleagues Robert Cozzolino and Julien Robson, Anatomy/Academy (2011) an exhibition that focused on how Philadelphia’s dynamic art and science communities have fostered knowledge of the human body. In 2012 Marley curated "A Mine of Beauty": Landscapes by William Trost Richards, editing the accompanying catalog, as well as the touring retrospective Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit (2012), and editing the acclaimed accompanying catalog, published by the University of California Press. In 2013, Marley co-curated Modern Women at PAFA: From Cassatt to O’Keeffe and Hidden Treasures Unveiled: Watercolors. Marley's recent exhibitions at PAFA include Spiritual Strivings: A Celebration of African American Works on Paper (2014). In 2015, she is curating the touring exhibition, The Artist's Garden: American Impressionism and the Garden Movement, 1887-1920 and is editor of the accompanying catalog published by University of Pennsylvania Press. She is working on future exhibits on Thomas Eakins’s photography and 19th-century history painting in the Americas. Marley’s professional affiliations include serving as Chair of the Association of Historians of American Art, and member of the Association of Art Museum Curators, College Art Association, and the Society of Early Americanists.

 

Kelli Morgan, Winston and Carolyn Lowe Curatorial Fellow, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts

Originally from Detroit, MI, Kelli Morgan, a scholar, curator, author, lecturer, and teacher, earned her Master of Arts degree in Afro-American Studies in 2013 and received a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies in 2006 from Wayne State University. Morgan is due to receive a doctorate in Afro-American Studies and a graduate certificate in Public History-Museum Studies this year from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.Morgan has worked in a variety of curatorial, programming, teaching, and research positions at various institutions including Wayne State, UMass-Amherst, and the Birmingham Museum of Art. She has also lectured at a variety of organizations including, Villanova University, Smith College, the Association of Art Museum Curators, and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. She is the recipient of awards and grants from the Ford Foundation, University of Massachusetts, Wayne State University, and was recently named the inaugural recipient of The Winston & Carolyn Lowe Curatorial Fellowship for Diversity in the Fine Arts at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. As an analyst of visual imagery, Morgan examines the ways in which people construct visual discourses, conceptualize images, and sometimes resist these discourses. Her interdisciplinary research concentrates on African American visual culture, linking Art History, Women’s Studies, African American History, and Museum Studies to analyze the complex ways that Black women artists visualize, represent, and reappropriate images of minority women to challenge mainstream visual discourses concerning beauty and sexuality. Ms. Morgan is a very diligent scholar whose career is committed to creating stimulating and culturally sensitive educational opportunities for students and public audiences alike through innovative uses of minority-produced visual culture and the museum gallery.

 

Jodi Throckmorton, Curator of Contemporary Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts

Jodi Throckmorton is curator of contemporary art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Previously, Throckmorton was curator of modern and contemporary art at the Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University, Kansas, and associate curator at the San Jose Museum of Art, California. She organized the exhibition and publication Postdate: Photography and Inherited History in India (2015). Other projects include Melt/Carve/Forge: Embodied Sculptures by Cassils (2016); Bruce Conner: Somebody Else’s Prints (2014); Questions from the Sky: New Work by Hung Liu (2013); Ranu Mukherjee: Telling Fortunes (2012); and This Kind of Bird Flies Backward: Paintings by Joan Brown (2011). Throckmorton is currently curating an exhibition and publication on the work of Rina Banerjee opening in 2018.
