Developing Donor Cultivation Confidence

About the Workshop and Panel

The first hour of this session will focus on a workshop led by Katharine DeShaw, Executive Director of United States Artists and former development officer at the Los Angeles County Museum and Walker Art Center. Ms. DeShaw will focus her workshop on identifying and cultivating individual donors.

Immediately following the workshop, Ms. De Shaw will join curators and development officers from the Brooklyn Museum and Birmingham Museum of Art who will discuss donor support groups that focus on building the museum collection and that work to identify future museum donors and trustees.

About the Panelists

A graduate of the CUNY Graduate Center, Teresa A. Carbone joined the Brooklyn Museum in 1985 and currently holds the title of Andrew W. Mellon Curator of American Art and Managing Curator, Arts of the Americas and Europe. Dr. Carbone served as co-curator of the 1999 exhibition "Eastman Johnson: Painting America,” and as co-author and volume editor of the accompanying catalogue, which was awarded the New York State Historical Associations’ Henry Allen Moe Prize. She was project director for "American Identities: A New Look”, the 2001 reinstallation of the Museum’s American art galleries. In 2006, she completed her work as principal author of the scholarly catalogue "American Paintings in the Brooklyn Museum: Artists Born by 1876,” which won the College Art Association’s 2006 Alfred H. Barr Prize and the Association of Art Museum Curators 2006 Annual Publication Prize for the best collection catalogue. Dr. Carbone is completing work on a major exhibition and catalogue titled "Youth and Beauty: Art of the American Twenties,” the first wide-ranging and synthetic presentation of American painting, sculpture and photography from the period bounded by the aftermath of the Great War and the onset of the Great Depression. The exhibition will open at the Brooklyn Museum in October 2011 and will travel on to the Dallas Museum of Art and the Cleveland Museum.

Katharine DeShaw is the Executive Director for United States Artists and in that capacity serves on its Board of Directors. On September 1, 2005, she was named the founding executive director of United States Artists. Ms. DeShaw has enjoyed a long career in the nonprofit sector working as a consultant, philanthropic advisor, senior development officer, and teacher. Consulting from 2002-05, she provided strategic management to national nonprofits and philanthropists. Ms. DeShaw created and launched the Nimoy Foundation and designed their national program Visual Artist Residences. She spent 12 years in art museum management, leading development efforts at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN. Ms. DeShaw also served as the senior development officer for Gay Men’s Health Crisis raising the first major corporate, foundation, and individual contributions in the fight against AIDS worldwide. Early in her career, she led record-breaking fundraising campaigns for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Twyla Tharp Dance based in New York City.

Jeannine A. O’Grody is the Chief Curator and Curator of European Art at the Birmingham Museum of Art. As a member of the senior management team, she oversees the departments of Curatorial, Registration, Preparation, Library, Photography, Website, and Exhibition Design. A graduate of the College of William & Mary, she received her M.A. from Syracuse University and Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University. Prior to joining the BMA, Jeannine worked at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and was a National Endowment for the Arts Curatorial Fellow at Harvard University's Fogg Art Museum.

Among the more recent exhibitions Jeannine has organized in Birmingham was Leonardo da Vinci: Drawings from the Biblioteca Reale in Turin (2008), featuring eleven rare drawings and the Codex on the Flight of Birds. She has also reinstalled the Italian, Dutch, English, and 19th-century European collections. Current projects include an exhibition on Daumier prints, Bouguereau in America, and the tondo in fifteenth-century Florence. As the Chief Curator, Jeannine seeks to improve communication both intra- and interdepartmentally, and to develop and implement a strategic plan for curatorial affairs. In 2009 she also reevaluated the BMA’s six collection support groups and created guidelines to calibrate expectations and better cultivate those partnerships.

Edgar Marx Jr. was born in Birmingham, Alabama. He received a B.A. in Economics with a concentration in International Studies from the University of Denver in 1992. He is the president of his family’s business, Marx Brothers, Inc. As an active member of the Birmingham community, Edgar serves as a board member of the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama, Birmingham Historical Society, and Highlands School.

Since 1995 Edgar has supported the Birmingham Museum of Art, where he has been president of the Junior Patrons Board and the Collectors Circle of Contemporary Art, a support group for the development of the modern and contemporary collection. Edgar is now serving his second term as a Museum Trustee, and has been a member of the Nominating, Governance, Re-accreditation, and Long-Range Planning Committees. Edgar is committed to developing the next generation of collectors and supporters of the BMA.
