The Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC) stands against La Salle University’s plan to sell 46 works of art from the university museum’s collection to raise funds for the university. This decision goes against fundamental best practices of museums, the very standards that have built and shaped the country’s tradition of establishing and preserving art collections for the public trust.

According to the La Salle University Art Museum’s website, “The collections serve the didactic needs of a teaching museum with a Lasallian mission centered on experiential education for college students as well as service to external audiences, particularly underserved schoolchildren.”1 The planned deaccession of art works for financial gain is not only unethical by the standards of the profession, it goes against the Museum’s own statement about the collection’s importance to its students and community.

The 46 paintings, drawings and sculptures to be sold include major works from the collection by artists such as Tintoretto, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Thomas Eakins, and Alex Katz; a full list can be viewed here.

While we empathize with the University’s fiscal concerns, we hope that its leadership will find solutions that will not endanger the education resources of its museum and do not breach the key standards and principles held within the Museum community.
