Announce ADAA Foundation Curatorial Awards

Inauguration of Two Research and Development Grants to

 Provide Essential Funding for Exhibition Development

Boston, May 14, 2012—In celebration of the 50^th Anniversary of the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) and the 11^th annual meeting of the Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC), the ADAA and AAMC are pleased to announce the creation of the ADAA Foundation Curatorial Awards. The two $10,000 awards will provide essential funding for museum curators to develop exhibition projects. The partnership, established initially for three years beginning this fall, will grant annual awards to one curator in each of the pre- and post-World War II fields.

"Our goal for the two ADAA Foundation Curatorial Awards is to honor exceptional curatorial visions and help museums get deserving projects off the ground,” says Linda Blumberg, Executive Director of the ADAA.  "ADAA and its members are committed to celebrating curatorial excellence and supporting innovative curatorial initiatives.  We know how difficult it can be to raise early R+D funds for an exhibition and are pleased to partner with the AAMC as an incubator for projects and ideas.” 

"We are delighted about our new partnership with the ADAA,” adds AAMC President, Carol S. Eliel. "For ten years the AAMC has been dedicated to supporting our members’ professional growth and honoring outstanding exhibitions from within, so it is particularly exciting that a group as esteemed as the ADAA will be providing outside support for curatorial endeavors through the AAMC.   It is especially gratifying that the ADAA Curatorial Awards will energize exhibition projects in their nascent stages. We are grateful to the ADAA for recognizing the critical importance of this early phase of exhibition research and development.”

A call for applications will be launched in August 2012. Awardees will be determined by committee and the inaugural grants will be announced at ADAA’s 50^th Anniversary Gala in November 2012.

 AAMC Announces its Fifth President, Carol S. Eliel

The Association of Art Museum Curators announced today the election of Carol S. Eliel, Curator of Modern Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, as its fifth president.  "In many ways, Carol has been the heart and soul of the AAMC since its founding ten years ago, so it is more than appropriate that she should be leading the organization into its next decade,” says Sally Block, Executive Director of the AAMC.  "Carol is one of the most respected scholars in the profession and her demonstrated commitment to curators is unwavering. It is an added bonus that she will be our first West Coast President, a region where we have seen a steady growth in membership over the past few years.”  Prior to her election, Eliel served as the AAMC’s Vice President for Communications (2009-11), Co-chair of the Prize Committee (2005-7) and Chair of the Collections Committee (2003-5).  She has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 2005. 

Eliel began her tenure at LACMA in 1984.  She has organized numerous exhibitions of classic modern art including The Apocalyptic Landscapes of Ludwig Meidner and L’Esprit Nouveau: Purism in Paris, 1918-1925; of cutting-edge contemporary art including Annette Messager and Contemporary Projects 6: Mariko Mori; and of mid-century art including SoCal: Southern California Art of the 1960s and 70s from LACMA’s Collection.  Most recently, she organized the exhibition David Smith: Cubes and Anarchy, currently on view at LACMA.   Eliel has also been responsible for numerous acquisitions at LACMA ranging from Marcel Duchamp to Aaron Curry.

Eliel succeeds John B. Ravenal, Sydney and Francis Lewis Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.  "John’s major contribution to the organization has been his thoughtful approach to professionalizing the AAMC,” Block says, "His term coincided with a tremendous period of growth for the organization, and John placed a premium on making sure that our governance and programmatic agendas were refined and well implemented.” During Ravenal’s tenure, the North American membership grew to over 1100 curators and the organization distributed over $45,000 in professional development travel grants.  Ravenal will continue to serve as a Trustee.

ASSOCIATION OF ART MUSEUM CURATORS ANNOUNCES

THE RECIPIENTS OF THE ANNUAL AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN 2010

For Release May 16, 2011, New York, NY

The Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC) announced today its annual Awards for Excellence in the categories of museum catalogues, articles, and exhibitions. Members of the AAMC are eligible for nomination, and awards are determined by the organization’s membership. "Each year our awards stand as the high-water mark for acknowledging the exemplary work of curators from across North America, " says Sally Block, Executive Director of the Association of Art Museum Curators, "What is most impressive is the these are the only awards given to curators by their peers.”

In the field of publications, the AAMC has honored Modern Women: Women Artists at the Museum of Modern Art as the Outstanding Catalogue based on a Permanent Collection. Edited by Cornelia Butler and Alexandra Schwartz, the catalogue includes essays from forty-eight contributing authors. "Modern Women is a refreshing and innovative model for rethinking what a collection catalogue can be,” says Austen Barron Bailly, prize juror and Associate Curator of American Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, "With its impressive range of voices and self-conscious approach to documenting the women artists in MoMA’s collection, this well-designed and thoughtfully researched book makes a vital contribution to art history and sets a new standard for the permanent collection catalogue.”

The Original Copy: Photography of Sculpture, 1839 to Today, also published by the Museum of Modern Art, took the top award for Outstanding Catalogue based on an Exhibition. "The Original Copy represents a ground-breaking contribution to the study of photography,” says Jay Clarke, Manton Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, and AAMC prize jury chair, "Its conceptual frame invites the reader to reconsider the photography of sculpture and indeed to question the genres of sculpture and performance all together. The authors approach what could be overly dense theoretical material in clear and insightful ways. The forward-looking yet user-friendly methodology of the text is paired with an equally clean and elegant book design.”

Respond to the Removal of the Maine Labor Mural Cycle

The recent removal of the Maine Labor Mural Cycle documenting key labor events in the history of our state, commissioned from artist Judy Taylor in 2008 and installed until last weekend in the headquarters of the Maine Department of Labor in Augusta, raises issues of critical importance to those of us who believe in the importance of public art. Among these issues are censorship, historical revisionism, and artists’ rights.

We deplore censorship in any form, but we particularly deplore the censoring of art. Those who may claim that the Maine Labor Mural Cycle is merely being transferred to another, more appropriate, locale, and neither destroyed nor censored, miss the point. Destruction takes many forms, vilification (even by innuendo) being one of them. Marshalling, as evidence of the mural’s ostensible offense, one anonymous letter equating the Maine labor mural with North Korean propaganda demonstrates a disregard for consensus, due process, and transparency. Moving the work from the site for which it was made to a site for which it was not made is simply destruction by another name, its "dislocation” intended to strip it of its force, immediacy, and relevance.

The situation has been exacerbated by the clandestine nature of the mural’s transference to an originally undisclosed, and still uncertain, location. Removed without, to our knowledge, the supervision of either a trained art handler or a museum registrar (or, for that matter, the artist herself), we neither know nor are able to assess its current condition. Given that the care and conservation of works of art are among a museum’s central roles, we are justly concerned. Until an independent assessment can be made, assurances that it is safe do not reassure us.

The desire to silence the provocations of art by those who find those provocations offensive has a long and dispiriting history. The Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Colby College Museum of Art, and Bates College Museum of Art, dedicated as we are to the preservation and interpretation of the past through its cultural artifacts, to the often discomfiting dialogue between the past and the present, and to art’s immutable power, are heartened by the passionate response by Maine’s lively and committed arts community to the mural cycle’s removal. We unreservedly add our voices to theirs.

Keynote Panel Announced for AAMC's 10th Anniversary Conference

Antonelli, Appiah, and Shearer to share their visions for the museum of the next decade

New York, NY – The AAMC announced today the keynote panel for their upcoming annual meeting that will take place from May 15 – 17, 2011.  The meeting will mark the organization’s tenth anniversary.  Over 400 curators are expected to attend.  Distinguished panelists will include Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art; K. Anthony Appiah, Laurance S. Rockefeller University Professor of Philosophy and the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University; and Linda Shearer, Executive Director of Project Row Houses.  The panel will be moderated by Philippe de Montebello, retired director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Fiske Kimball Professor in the History and Culture of Museums at New York University.  Prior to the panel, de Montebello will receive the organization’s first ever Philippe de Montebello Award for Distinguished Service, an award named in his honor to recognize his instrumental support in founding the organization, and his years of dedication to the curatorial profession. 

The keynote panel will address the museum of the next decade.  Panelists will discuss how trends in curatorial practice and the evolving global and technical nature of our daily interactions will shape the museum experience of 2021. "We are delighted to have such an esteemed panel to start off our tenth anniversary,” says John Ravenal, AAMC President, "With a leading curator, long-time museum director, and celebrated philosopher approaching the topic from three unique vantage points, we are assured an interesting look at the museum of the future.”   

Founded in 2001, the Association of Art Museum Curators supports and promotes the work of museum curators by creating opportunities for professional development, collaboration, networking, and advancement.  The organization has a current membership of over 1100 curators from over 340 museums across North America.  The AAMC annual meeting is the only forum in which curators of all fields and disciplines, from museums large and small, come together to share best practices and to address issues of mutual concern to the profession.

Just as we worry about the safety of Egypt’s citizens in this time of civil unrest, so, too, do we worry about the safety of the country’s cultural heritage—works of art and material culture crucial to our understanding of world civilization and humanity.

We, the representatives of the leading American museums and university art and art history departments, stand with the people of Egypt in their determination to protect 5,000 years of history, including those objects from history that remain unexcavated. Our members—more than 21,000 institutions and individuals—stand ready to assist in any way possible to secure the art and artifacts of Egypt.

STATEMENT OF SUPPORT FOR EGYPT

The undersigned cultural heritage and archaeological organizations express their concern over the loss of life and injury to humans during the protests in Egypt this week. We support the desire of the Egyptian people to exercise their basic civil rights. We also share their concern about the losses to cultural heritage that Egypt has already sustained and the threat of further such losses over the coming days.

Brave actions taken by the citizens of Cairo and the military largely protected the Cairo Museum. However, numerous sites, museums and storage areas located outside of Cairo are even more vulnerable. As the prisons are opened, the potential for greater loss is created. Multiple reports now say that damage has been done to storage areas and tombs in Abusir and Saqqara and that looting is occurring there and in other locations.

We call on the Egyptian authorities to exercise their responsibilities to protect their country’s irreplaceable cultural heritage. At the same time, we call on United States and European law enforcement agencies to be on the alert over the next several months for the possible appearance of looted Egyptian antiquities at their borders.

The Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC) announces its annual Awards for Excellence in the categories of museum catalogues, articles, and exhibitions. Members of the AAMC are eligible for nomination, and awards are determined by the organization’s membership.

"We had nearly one-hundred nominations for prizes this year, all of which were distinguished by their quality, variety, and standard of excellence” remarks Sally Block, Executive Director of the AAMC. "It speaks to a creativity and spirit of innovation that is exceptionally encouraging, particularly at this moment when we are all being asked to do more with less. Across the board, the catalogues, essays, and exhibitions showed a consistent engagement with current scholarship- often breaking new ground- and yet, were also thoughtfully designed or installed”.

In the field of permanent collection catalogues, the AAMC has awarded Michael R. Taylor’s Marcel Duchamp: Étant donnés its highest honor. "Permanent collection catalogues take a variety of forms, from comprehensive analysis of an entire department’s collection to surveys of the best quality works within an art museum’s collection, says Andrew J. Walker, Assistant Director for Curatorial Affairs at the Saint Louis Art Museum and AAMC Permanent Collection Jury Chair. "What distinguished this year’s winner, the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s magisterial Marcel Duchamp: Étant donnés, is the rare opportunity to explore with scholarly and technical rigor, a single work of art. The book, edited with precision by Michael R. Taylor, the Museum’s Muriel and Philip Berman Curator of Modern Art, demonstrates that understanding the genesis, construction, installation and legacy of Duchamp's construction can only be accomplished through the breadth of the PMA’s extensive collection.”

Bauhaus 1919 - 1933: Workshops for Modernity, published by the Museum of Modern Art, took the top award for both Outstanding Exhibition Catalogue and Outstanding Exhibition in the Eastern Time Zone, the latter honor it shares with the exhibition organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston: Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese: Rivals in Renaissance Venice.

"Bauhaus is simply an indispensable book for anyone interested in 20th century art, design, architecture, and pedagogy”, says Constance Lewallen, Adjunct Curator at the Berkeley Art Museum and AAMC Exhibition Catalogue Jury Chair. "It amply documents the long-overdue, comprehensive exhibition at MoMA—amazingly, the first at the Museum since 1938 (and that one omitted the last several years of the school's existence). The curators, Barry Bergdoll and Leah Dickerman deserve high praise for their important contribution to our understanding of the art, the teachers, and the students of this unique institution.”

Mission of the AAMC

The mission of the Association of Art Museum Curators is to support and promote the work of museum curators by creating opportunities for networking, collaboration, professional development, and advancement. With a membership of over 900, the goals of the AAMC are to:

· Serve as an advocacy group for the curatorial profession

· Articulate professional standards and best practices

· Promote best practices and professional relationships through Annual Meetings and educational programs on selected themes held at venues throughout North America

· Promote research, scholarship, and networking opportunities through travel grants

· Use the website to exchange scholarly and procedural information as well as traveling exhibition and employment opportunities

· Recognize distinguished achievement in the field through annual awards

· Provide an open forum for discussion about museum issues in North America

· Accomplish these goals in cooperation with museum directors, trustees, and other staff as well as other national cultural and arts advocacy organizations
