2014 Mentorship Program Webinar Series - Mentee Webinars*



Newly minted graduate students going into the museum field have not necessarily been trained for their position but “grow into it.” But how does a curator identify and maximize career possibilities in today’s new digital, multi-interpretative, and crowd-sourced museum environment?  The session, moderated by Gloria Groom,  includes two leaders in the field, Elizabeth Easton, Director of the Center for Curatorial Leadership (CCL) and Julian Cox, Founding Curator of Photography and Chief Curator at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. The discussion will consider their career paths and the decisions that have most impacted their professional growth with a goal to finding new strategies for identifying opportunities for change and growth.


Gloria Groom received her PhD from the University of Texas at Austin and graduate certificate from the Ecole du Louvre, Paris.  In 1993, her monograph, Edouard Vuillard: Painter-Decorator, was published by Yale University Press.  She has been involved as author and organizer for major loan exhibitions and catalogues on Gauguin, Odilon Redon, Caillebotte, Renoir, Manet, Seurat, Toulouse-Lautrec, the art dealer Ambroise Vollard and the Nabi group of artists in Beyond the Easel: Decorative Painting by Bonnard, Denis, Roussel and Vuillard, 1890-1930.  Most recently she was lead curato for the exhibition Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity (Musée d’Orsay, Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago 2012-2013).  Since 2009 Gloria has led the project for the monographic on-line scholarly collection catalogues initiated by the Getty – involving an international team of scholars, conservators and scientists.  The volumes for Monet and Renoir paintings and graphic works were launched in June 2014; Pissarro, Manet, Gauguin and Caillebotte are scheduled for December 2015. Her future exhibitions include Van Gogh’s Bedrooms (2015) and Gauguin : Painter and Sculpture (2017 with the Musée d’Orsay). Dr. Groom was made Chevalier des arts et des lettres in 2005 and in 2013 Officier of the same order.


Elizabeth Easton
 Since 2007, Elizabeth Easton has been the Director of the Center for Curatorial Leadership (CCL), a not-for-profit organization she co-founded with Agnes Gund to train museum curators in the fundamentals of management and leadership. A distinguished curator, art historian and educator, she formulated the program for CCL as a direct result of her service as the first elected president of the Association of Art Museum Curators (2003-2006). Easton earned her Ph.D. at Yale University, writing her dissertation on Edouard Vuillard's Interiors of the 1890's. She joined the Brooklyn Museum in 1988 as Assistant Curator, and was Chair of the Department of European Painting and Sculpture from 1999 until 2006. During her tenure, she was responsible for numerous exhibitions, including The Intimate Eye of Edouard Vuillard; Frederic Bazille: Prophet of Impressionism; Monet and the Mediterranean; Brooklyn Collects, among many others. She has written books and numerous articles and essays for exhibition catalogues and a variety of art journals; she recently served as lead curator on the exhibition Snapshot: Painters and Photography from Bonnard to Vuillard that opened at the Van Gogh Museum in 2011, and traveled to the Phillips Collection in Washington and the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2012. Other recent scholarship has focused on original Impressionist frames. Among the many academic honors she has received, she was awarded a Fulbright and two Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships. In recognition of her contributions to French culture, Easton was appointed Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the French Government in 2008. She has served as a trustee of the Town School, the Spence School, Studio in a School, the International Foundation for Art Research (IFAR), is on the Visiting Committee of the Department of Paintings Conservation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and is on the advisory boards of a number of other cultural institutions.

Julian Cox joined the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in 2010 as its Founding Curator of Photography and Chief Curator. He was educated in Great Britain and holds a BA in Art History from the University of Manchester and an M.Phil in the History of Photography from the University College of Wales. After holding curatorial positions at the National Library of Wales and the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television, Bradford, England, he moved to the United States in 1992 to pursue his career here. For more than a decade he worked with the photographs collection at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, and then spent five years leading the photography program at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta.  Cox has organized numerous exhibitions on subjects ranging from the dawn of photography’s invention in Europe in the 19th century, to contemporary practice in the United States. Julian is the co-author, with Colin Ford, of the critically acclaimed publication: Julia Margaret Cameron: The Complete Photographs (2003), the first catalogue raisonné produced on the work of a photographer. He is the author of many scholarly articles and several books. His publications include:- Spirit into Matter: The Photographs of Edmund Teske (2004); Harry Callahan: Eleanor (2007);  Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956-1968 (2008); Controversy and Hope: The Civil Rights Photographs of James Karales (2013) and, most recently,  Anthony Friedkin: The Gay Essay (2014).
