About the Panel

Drawn from proposals submitted by members of the AAMC, this panel will discuss various exhibition collaborations between curators and others outside the museum including artists, scientists, independent curators, or university and civic partners.

About the Panelists

Shelley Langdale is the Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and has worked at the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Cleveland Museum of Art before coming to Philadelphia in 2002. She has lectured and published on a variety of topics (from the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci to the contemporary Japanese video installation artist, Tabaimo) and has organized a wide range of exhibitions, including shows of Renaissance prints and drawings, American Folk Art on paper, Japanese 19th & 20th century prints, and contemporary works on paper. Recently she was part of the curatorial team for the inaugural presentation of an international art festival that explored the vital role of print in contemporary art, Philagrafika 2010, held at museums and sites throughout the city of Philadelphia in the winter of 2010. Currently she is working on an exhibition of 16th-century Italian chiaroscuro woodcuts and an exhibition of prints from the Brandywine workshop in Philadelphia.

Adriana Proser has been Curator of John H. Foster Curator for Traditional Asian Art at the Asia Society since 2004. She is a specialist in Chinese art, with eleven years of curatorial experience. Recipient of a 1995 Ph.D. and Masters degree in Chinese Art and Archaeology from Columbia University, Proser completed her undergraduate studies in Chinese language and Literature at the University of Massachusetts. In addition to her studies in the United States, Proser studied for seven months at Tunghai University in Taiwan and completed a year-long program in calligraphy, history of calligraphy, seal carving, and paleography at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, People's Republic of China. Her dissertation focused on Han period calligraphy.

Prior to joining the Asia Society, Proser was Assistant Curator of East Asian Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where she published on the Museum’s holdings and worked on numerous collection-based exhibitions of Chinese, Korean, and Japanese art. She held the position of Chang Ching-kuo Foundation Chinese Art Scholar in Residence in the Division of Education at Philadelphia Museum of Art prior to this. She has taught East Asian art history courses at The University of Pennsylvania, Loyola College in Maryland, and Columbia University. She has lectured widely on topics ranging from Chinese architecture to Korean ceramics.

Sarah Schroth is the Nancy Hanks Senior Curator at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and Adjunct Professor of Art History, Department of Art, Art History and Visual Studies at Duke University. She received her Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University in 1990. She received the David E. Finley Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study at the National Gallery of Art (1987-1990). A specialist in Spanish art of the seventeenth century, in 2008, she co-organized with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the award-winning international loan exhibition, El Greco to Velázquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III. As a result of this exhibition and its programs, she was named knight-commander in the Order of Isabel la Católica by the King Juan Carlos of Spain.

Schroth has been at the Nasher since 1995, before that Schroth was curator at the Ackland Art Museum, UNC-CH, and received the first two-year curatorial internship awarded at the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth.

Among the recent shows she has curated at the Nasher are: Beyond Beauty: Photographs from the Duke University Special Collections Library (2008), Color Balance: Paintings of Felrath Hines and Alma Thomas (2010). Currently she serves as the coordinating curator for The Vorticists: Rebel Artists in London and New York 1914-1918 (2010-2011).

Joaneath Spicer 
is the James A. Murnaghan Curator of Renaissance and Baroque Art. She received her BA from Smith College and PhD from Yale University (1979). After teaching at University of Toronto, she came to the Walters in 1990. Besides publications on Netherlandish drawings, art and science at the court of Rudolf II in Prague ca. 1600, the role of the visitor in 17th-century art collections and in exhibitions today, body language, collecting bronzes in the Renaissance, and Italian painting, the most important being the major exhibition Masters of Light, Dutch Painters in Utrecht in the Golden Age (1997-98), in 1998-2005 she focused on reinstalling the Renaissance and Baroque collections including the widely acclaimed 17th-century Chamber of Wonders. Recently her main project is the exhibition Saints, Slaves, and Diplomats: the African Presence in Renaissance Europe opening in October 2012. In this connection she is a contributor to the Image of the Black in Western Art project. She is also in the midst of a joint research project with a neuroscientist at Johns Hopkins, considering the role of tactility in the collecting of small bronzes in the Renaissance.
