Learning From: Diversifying Curation & Conservation will discuss the duty of museums to diversify the fields of curation and conservation concerning race and to collect, preserve, and study non-Western art, including tips and tools museum professionals can implement to balance work and expectations between two institutions for a multi-year program.

This webinar is part of our three part summer series "Learning From", spotlighting three unique endeavors: Diversifying Curation and Conservation, ART_CC, and The Paper Project. Through three individual sessions, we will delve into the inception, evolution, and key takeaways from each project, offering valuable insights for museum professionals. From balancing expectations between institutions to fostering diversity in curation and conservation, and preserving traditional expertise while embracing innovation, this series will bring with it practical tips and tools to navigate complex projects successfully.

Moderator

Kenlontae Turner, Curator of Collections, Hampton University Museum

 

Kenlontae Turner helps to manage the permanent collection at Hampton University Museum, as well as being involved with public programming, social media, and research and logistics behind exhibitions. Turner, a native of Virginia, comes to Hampton University after recently working at the Freer Gallery of Art & Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington, D.C. He is a graduate of Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia, where he majored in studio art with a double minor in museum studies and art history. He earned a master’s degree in art and museum studies from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Angie Lopez, Andrew W. Mellon Conservation Fellow, Chrysler. Museum of Art and Hampton University Museum


Angie Lopez is the Andrew W. Mellon Conservation Fellow for Hampton University Museum and the Chrysler Museum of Art. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Art Conservation and Art History, with a minor in Latin and Iberian studies from the University of Delaware. Lopez has completed conservation internships at Winterthur Museum and Gardens, Central Park Conservancy, and the Maryland Center for History and Culture.

Tashae Smith, Andrew W. Mellon Curatorial Fellow, Chrysler Museum of Art and Hampton University Museum

 

Tashae Smith is the Andrew W. Mellon Curatorial Fellow for Hampton University Museum and the Chrysler Museum of Art. She received her Bachelor’s degree in History and Museum Studies from Manhattanville College and her Master’s degree in Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program. Smith has held positions at the Hudson River Maritime Museum and the Mattatuck Museum. She has completed curatorial internships at the American Civil War Museum and the Baseball Hall of Fame.
