CALL FOR PANELISTS: Association of Art Museum Curators, May 17, 2010, Chicago, IL
Date: February 3, 2010
Posted by: AAMC Conference Committee
Deadline: 03/1/2010

Reinvigorating The Permanent Collection
The AAMC is requesting proposals from curators for a special session at the upcoming Annual Meeting on Monday, May 17, 2010.  Moderated by Graham Boettcher, The William Cary Hulsey Curator of American Art at the Birmingham Museum of Art, this session will highlight innovative curatorial practice with regard to the permanent collection.
Whether as a result of the current economic climate or a change in programmatic priorities, many museums are relying less on expensive traveling and "blockbuster" shows. Curators are turning to their museums' permanent collections in new and exciting ways.  These exhibits are being featured as special changing exhibitions and/or presented outside of the permanent collection galleries.  How are curators rediscovering the permanent collection? How are new technologies being used to re-invigorate permanent collections? What other methodologies are considered when engaged in reinterpretation and reinstallation?

Proposals are being sought from curators from a range of art museums (size, collection, mission, region) to talk about how their institutions have reinvigorated their permanent collections.
Please submit a short (no more than 400 words) description of a program or plan instituted by your museum that highlights a successful program to reinvigorate your permanent collection.  In your description, please make sure to highlight the curatorial role in the program as well as additional information about intended audience, funding considerations, timing of project and any other useful historical information relevant to the museum and the implementation of this project.
If selected, the AAMC will cover the cost of airfare to the Annual Meeting (with advanced booking and up to $400).  Hotel accommodations and other expenses will be the responsibility of the presenting curator.  Please note that there is no registration fee for AAMC members to attend the conference.
Please email proposals by March 1, 2010 to Sally Block at
