August 13, 2024, NEW YORK, NY —The AAMC Foundation announced the 2024 Propel Program Fellows. In an era of growing responsibilities and limited professional development options, the AAMC Foundation’sPropel Program offers invaluable learning experiences to help participants enhance their leadership skills and advocacy efforts. Since its inception in 2014, this esteemed program has hosted Fellows from 30 U.S. states and 14 countries. Notably, over 80% of participants have achieved at least one new or advanced role following their involvement in the program.
“We are incredibly proud and excited to carry forward this crucial and distinctive global program for mid-career curators," stated Emma Huneck, Senior Program Manager at AAMC Foundation. "Its dynamic nature stems from its rich, multifaceted learning and hands-on experiences, which are at the heart of our mission: to advance and elevate the curatorial field; to break down barriers through inclusivity, collaboration, and increased access within art organizations; and to strengthen public and audience engagement with curatorial practices.”
Providing each Fellow with stipends and full travel/accommodation for all elements, the 10-month program has four major components, which are:- In-person Intensive Workshop in NYC, November 2024
- Virtual learning sessions, February through March 2025
- In-Person Intensive Workshop in NYC, May 2025
- One on one Mentor partnership, including a multi-day in-person visit and online meetings, October 2024 through April 2025
- Attendance and alumni networking at the 2025 Art Curators Conference, May 2025
In-person workshops include one one-on-one consultations with a career advice coach, a half-day experience at a major NYC museum, a fundraising practicum, a communication and leadership style learning experience, and seminars on self-advocacy and promotion. Virtual sessions will engage community leaders on the topics of international partnerships, strategic thinking and planning, working with boards, financial management, community partnerships, and sustainable curating.
Another component of the program is a partnership with a senior-level curator advisor, that meets with the fellows throughout the year, and whom the fellows also visit in person. This year’s group of advisors includes senior-level curators from the Art Institute of Chicago, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Huntington Library, Museum Rietberg, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Storm King Art Center, and the Vancouver Art Gallery, as well as Independently.
In May 2025, the Fellows will attend the Art Curators Conference, along with their cohort, program alumni, and curators from around the world. The program concludes with a virtual meeting of the cohort, with each Fellow presenting how the program impacted and shaped their goals and development.
