Call For Nominations - AAMC & AAMC Foundation Board of Trustees President

The Governance & Nominating Committee of the AAMC & AAMC Foundation calls for self-nominations for President of the Board of Trustees for the 2019 - 2021 term. While the incoming President will not take office until May 2019, we are holding the election at this time to ensure the President-elect has a period of orientation and overlap with the current President.

The Committee will present at least one but not more than two candidates to the full Membership. All AAMC members in good standing may vote for the candidate(s) via electronic ballot. In accordance with the by-laws of the organization, Governance & Nominating may choose to present only one candidate on a ballot.


ELIGIBILITY & NOMINATIONS

Nomination forms require information about the candidate's record of service to the AAMC & AAMC Foundation, a statement of interest, a statement about what you believe to be the major concerns facing the non-profit arts community today, a support letter from a direct supervisor, and an additional recommendation letter from a colleague with first-hand knowledge of your specific abilities to serve in this role. Please access the full self-nomination form here.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Be a current member of the AAMC, and have served/be serving on the Board of Trustees.

  • Show evidence of achievement in the curatorial profession, as well as the non-profit arts community.
  • Be well respected by colleagues, with a positive demeanor and overall good humor.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity, access, and collaboration.

 

EXPECTATIONS

Prospective candidates should be aware that, although the AAMC & AAMC Foundation will support the President with a modest travel allowance to attend the Annual Conference and other required activities, the President is required to attend board meetings as well as the Annual Conference each year during the term. Full descriptions of the position's responsibilities are listed below. On average, the President should be prepared to commit 10+ hours per week to the organization, varying at times to be less or more depending on the time of year. The term of office is two years; however, the term may be extended for one additional year with approval of the Board of Trustees.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

POLICY &  PLANNING

  • Prepare in advance for decision-making and policy formation at Board meetings.
  • Take responsibility for self-education on the major issues before the Board.
  • Ensure that the Board of Trustees is working to fulfill the key objectives of the strategic plan.
  • Assure that the Board of Trustees fulfills its responsibilities for the governance of the organizations.
  • When appropriate, serve as the organizational spokesperson.

FINANCES & FUNDRAISING

  • With the Finance Committee, oversee and review budgets regularly to ensure all legal and fiduciary responsibilities of the organizations are met.
  • Assist with fundraising and motivating fundraising initiatives.
  • Ensure that all Board members contribute financially to the organizations, with a commitment which includes making a financial contribution at $1,000 for those with an annual income at or above $75,000, and $500 for those below that mark, as well as supporting other fund development activities of the AAMC Foundation.

BOARD & BOARD DEVELOPMENT

  • Chair meetings of the AAMC Executive Committee and AAMC Foundation Board of Trustees, which are each approximately two hours in duration. The Board meets at least three (3) times per year in person or via conference call. Be accessible for personal contact in between Board meetings.
  • Present to the Board the President’s Report, as needed per meeting.
  • Ensure the Board is updated on the pace, direction, and strength of the organizations.
  • Participate in Board development, including periodic planning retreats.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director in recruiting for the Board and other volunteer assignments as needed, being inclusive of the organizations' diversity initiatives.
  • Be an active participant in leadership transitions and orientation of newly elected President.
  • Participate in the Board assessment process.

COMMITTEES & TASK FORCES

  • Provide leadership to Committees and Task Forces as needed & requested.
  • Responsibly review and act upon Executive Director, Committee, and Task Force recommendations.

STAFF OVERSIGHT, COMPENSATION AND EVALUATION

  • Meet with the Executive Director on a regular but as needed basis to review activities and goals of the organizations.
  • Conduct an annual review of the Executive Director based on the Yearly Performance Review (held before February 20 in each new year) and recommend salary for consideration by the Board.
  • Assist Executive Director, if requested, with any other staff reviews and concerns, and present to the Board the Executive Director’s recommendation for staff salary increases.
