We are sharing the below letter on behalf of Stephanie Stebich, The Margaret and Terry Stent Director, at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.  For specific enquiries regarding the details of this news, we ask that you contact the museum directly.

Dear Colleagues,

We find ourselves in the position of needing to impose a loan moratorium on works from the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s permanent collection (including our branch museum the Renwick Gallery) from January 2020 through August 2022.  During this period we will be focused on a major building-wide project in our Donald W. Reynolds Center building to improve our lighting system.  We are also taking the opportunity to re-envision our galleries, as we empty them one by one, and anticipate a refreshed and exciting presentation of our collection.

We will certainly honor any loans that are already approved for this time period. Further, we will continue to consider loan requests for exhibitions that open in September 2022 and forward, although it may take longer than usual for us to respond.  Please bear in mind that we ask that we receive domestic requests nine months in advance of the exhibition opening and international requests twelve months in advance of opening due to our conservation assessment process for all outgoing loans.

We appreciate your understanding our necessity for a loan moratorium and look forward to returning to business as usual after August 2022 as generous lenders of the national collection of American art and craft that is enjoyed by some three million visitors annually in Washington DC.
