ART FUND SUPPORTS AAMC FOUNDATION’S FIRST INTERNATIONAL CURATORIAL CONFERENCE TRAVEL FELLOWSHIP

The Fellowship will support eight UK-based curators

to attend AAMC’s 2019 Conference in New York City and peer pairings with US curators

January 11, NEW YORK, NY -- The Association of Art Museum Curators Foundation will be partnering with Art Fund, a United Kingdom-based arts charity, on the Art Fund and AAMC Foundation Conference Travel Fellowship. This particular Fellowship program provides funding for UK-based curators to attend the AAMC & AAMC Foundation annual conference, helping to further the AAMC Foundation’s reach and support the development of international networks and collaborations.  It is the first international Conference Travel Fellowship for the AAMC Foundation.

The Art Fund & AAMC Foundation Conference Travel Fellowship will cover the expenses of up to eight UK-based curators in 2019, providing funding for their registration fees for the Conference and associated weekend tours, travel and accommodations; a pairing with a peer US-based curator to offer collegial partnership throughout the Conference; an invitation to the AAMC Foundation’s Program Alumni Reception; and a 2-year AAMC membership, among other benefits.  In addition, Art Fund will work with AAMC Foundation to offer a possible follow-up research and development grant opportunity to the fellows through a second proposal process.   The program is generously funded by Art Fund in 2019, in partnership with the AAMC Foundation.

In addition to the new Art Fund & AAMC Foundation Conference Travel Fellowship, the AAMC Foundation is also offering Conference Travel Grant Fellowships for Junior Curators through the generosity of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.   Each year AAMC & AAMC Foundation is honored to award Conference Travel Fellowships for curators to attend our Annual Conference and Meeting. Since 2010 alone, over 200 individual Curatorial Travel Fellowships have been awarded. Past supporters of this program include the Henry Luce Foundation, the Terra Foundation for American Art, and the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.

Stephen Deuchar, Director, Art Fund, said, “One of Art Fund’s aims as an organization is to support the development of curatorial expertise in Britain’s museums, and we believe that many specialists here would benefit from forging stronger links with their US counterparts. So, we’re very pleased now to be working with AAMC to offer this new opportunity to all UK-based art curators.”

“Fostering collaboration and engagement between curators across geographical boundaries is critical to our mission,” noted Judith Pineiro, Executive Director, AAMC & AAMC Foundation. “We are immensely grateful for the Art Fund recognizing the value this program has on the curatorial field and our larger museum community.”

The AAMC & AAMC Foundation Annual Conference & Meeting attracts over 400+ curators and guests from a range of disciplines and from around the world. The only conference of its kind dedicated solely to the curatorial profession serving curators in all fields and all levels of experience, the conference fosters the profession's cohesiveness by addressing issues of national and international relevance, assisting in professional development, and promoting dialogue and exchange among curators. The multi-day event includes keynote sessions, workshops, panel discussions, receptions at host city cultural institutions, and a full membership meeting.

This year’s Conference will take place on May 4-7, 2019 in New York City, with events and sessions at over 20 organizations throughout the city.  The sessions for the program will discuss topics around internal and external engagement within art organizations and look at the possibilities and responsibilities of the curatorial role within inclusive and accessible engagement practices. Sessions include Donors and Evolving Missions, The Public Library: New Curatorial Perspectives, Diverse Educational Pipeline Programs Now, and Inside Out: Cultural Institutions & Communities.  The 2019 Keynote Dialogues will feature Dr. Andrea Barnwell Brownlee, Director, Spelman College Museum of Fine Art and Dr. Mary Schmidt Campbell, President, Spelman College; and Dr. William D. Adams, Senior Fellow, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Former Chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities and Dr. Jane Chu, PBS Arts Adviser and Artist, Former Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts.
