August 13, 2019, NEW YORK, NY -- As part of its mission to serve as a resource and advocate for art curators across the US and internationally, AAMC Foundation spearheaded an initiative in 2007 to create the first handbook for curators designed to advance best practices and support professional development. The newest edition of Professional Practices for Art Curators in Nonprofits that was released digitally today includes contributions from leading voices in the field and has been revised to address critical issues faced by curators working today. The guide highlights the significance of cooperation (internally and externally), transparency, and engagement, as well as the importance of embracing inclusivity and accessibility in every aspect of the curatorial field, including but not limited to collection development, exhibitions, hiring, and mentoring.

Key issues discussed in the guidebook include:

  • Successful applications of digital strategies;
  • Sustaining meaningful momentum supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in the field;
  • Strategies for engagement and collaboration with the public;
  • Pathways to developing a curatorial career;
  • Increased focus on open sharing of  provenance, including conditions of transfer and colonialism; and
  • Shifts in how the for-profit and nonprofit sector work together.
