Art Curators Conference Concludes

ART CURATORS CONFERENCE CONCLUDES Association of Art Museum Curators Hosted Global Gathering of Curatorial Leaders New York, NY, May 4, 2022—On Tuesday, May 3, the Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC) and AAMC Foundation concluded its 2022 Art Curators Conference, the largest annual gathering of curators and the only Conference dedicated to an international dialogue amongst all nonprofit curators. Held in-person in NYC and virtually, the Conference met individuals in their space. Overall attendance neared 400 individuals from 17 countries, including Algeria, Austria, Belgium, Belize, Brazil, Canada, England, Haiti, India, Italy, Kosovo, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, Philippines, Scotland, and the U.S, with representation from 40 U.S. states. AAMC Foundation helped support complimentary Conference attendance to nearly 100 curators, including those participating in the AAMC Foundation’s Mentorship Program, Professional Alliance for Curators of Color (2021 and 2022), Engagement Program for International Curators, Conference fellows, and more. Centered on the theme of Sustainability and Revitalization, sessions investigated de-centralizing curatorial models; exploring art that engages with collective trauma and difficult knowledge; art tourism’s impact on communities around the world; and labor workplace alternatives, including unionization. Our final day of programming dedicated an entire half day devoted solely to climate topics. Featured key speakers included: Jennifer Atkinson, Associate Professor of Environmental Humanities, University of Washington, Bothell on Building Resilience for a Climate-Changed Future Elizabeth Ferrer, Chief Curator, BRIC on Championing Cultural Diversity at BRIC Lisa Gold, Executive Director, Asian American Arts Alliance Kenneth V. Hardy, Ph.D., Clinical & Organizational Consultant, Eikenberg Institute for Relationships on Becoming and Being a Cross-Racial Ally: Tips and Tactics for Talking about Race (Part II) Gretchen Jennings, Co-Founder, The Empathetic Museum on Empathy as Action Pamela J. Joyner and Brooke A. Minto, Executive Director, Black Trustee Alliance for Art Museums, Keynote Interview on The Black Trustees Alliance Xavier Cortada, Artist and Professor of Practice Department of Art & Art History, University of Miami and Jane M. Winchell, The Sarah Fraser Robbins Director | The Dotty Brown Art & Nature Center, Curator of Natural History, Peabody Essex Museum - In-conversation Additional guest speakers and workshop leaders included Yejin Lee, Equity & Justice Coach and Consulting, Jeong Coaching and Consulting; Heather MacDonald, Senior Program Officer, Getty Foundation; and nico wheadon, Art Advisor, Curator, Educator & Writer. On Sunday, May 1, the AAMC held its annual Awards for Excellence Celebration, which paid tribute to the opening/closing/postponing of curatorial projects by awarding exhibitions and publications from 2020 and 2021, as well as the 2021 groundbreaking digital curatorial achievements. Ten projects were honored: Difference Machines: Technology and Identity in Contemporary Art; Alien vs. Citizen; The Dirty South: Contemporary Art, Material Culture, and the Sonic Impulse; Like Sugar; Mirror with a Memory: Photography, Surveillance, and Artificial Intelligence; Reconstructions: Architecture and Blackness in America; Black Power in Print: The Black Panther Newspapers at MoMA; Malangatana: Mozambique Modern; Willi Smith: Street Couture Virtual Exhibition; and The Black Index. To conclude the evening events, a Members’ Party was held at the Whitney Museum of American Art, with a private viewing of the Whitney Biennial, Quiet as It’s Kept.
