Call for Panel Proposals

THE 2023 ART CURATORS CONFERENCE THEME ANNOUNCED. All current AAMC members are encouraged to submit a session proposal and moderate a discussion on the topic of Empowerment. September, 2022, New York -- All AAMC members are strongly encouraged to submit panel proposals for the 2023 Art Curators Conference. The theme will center on the topic of Empowerment. AAMC members should seek to suggest panels they would like to moderate and/or encourage colleagues they wish to hear from to do so. In submitting a proposal you do not need to secure speakers, only provide a concept and how you see it relating to the theme. Questions that arise from the theme could include: How can we find ways to shift the power away from a singular, curatorial voice to develop methods where curators take the role of facilitators in a process of learning and discovery, equally engage with colleagues in the creation process, and share their leadership? How can we learn from grassroots initiatives that seek to reinvent structures in our arts organizations? How can art institutions empower their communities, for example by serving as mass vaccination sites, voter registration centers, and places of relief for activists for change? How can curators lift up and give power to the unseen and unheard to highlight and address the deep fissures that arise from the erasure of people and cultures in our academies and arts organizations?
Proposals should consider initiatives overhauling the visual arts ecosystem, museum environments included; altering structures resulting in cultural changes in museums, arts organizations, and arts professions; sustaining and advancing work to ensure arts institutions are equitable and inclusive; leveraging the curatorial voice’s leadership role to transform the dynamics in our spaces, exhibitions, and acquisitions.
We anticipate dialogues at the Conference reflecting the topic from the standpoint of environmental, societal, racial, equity, and heritage. Proposals must consider the full spectrum of interpretations, investigating issues holistically and not solely through the curatorial lens. Panels should propose discussions acknowledging the community curators serve. Speakers from for-profit and non-profit sectors are welcome and are not limited to the visual arts sector.
Only current AAMC members can submit panel ideas for possible sessions that they will moderate at the second hybrid Conference to be held in New York City and online May 6 - 9, 2023 (moderators are expected to attend in-person). SUBMIT A PANEL PROPOSAL
