 2021 Virtual Art Curators Conference

April 29 - 30 &
May 3 - 4, 2021

Call for Proposals Now Open!

Deadline October 29, 12 PM EST

We acknowledge that there are great uncertainties towards gathering and traveling now and far into next year. To assure our audience of access to the important conversations held during our Art Curators Conference, our 2021 edition will be held entirely on a virtual platform, with no in-person components planned. The program will include live and recorded panels, keynotes, and workshops, alongside networking and socializing opportunities.

For our 2021 Art Curators Conference, we ask members to submit panel proposals considering the meaning of the word identity. With a virtual platform, we hope that panels will present a wide geographical range of speakers - opening up a dialogue once prohibitive due to travel schedules. Pre-recorded sessions addressing timezone concerns among speakers can be considered.

Our visual arts community’s interpretation, promotion, and usage of, as well as its reaction to and impact on the concept of identity, offers varied possible dialogues. In selecting this topic, we anticipate proposals addressing identity and its complex relationship to individuals, communities, historical groups and lands; its impact on cultural heritage and preservation; its role in colonialism, racism, and the transfer of power; the labeling of canonical histories; its influence in the marketplace; in matters of individual and group bias; in collection building and issues of provenance; in shaping the 21st-century museum; the physical and virtual; and others.

As always, we request proposals considering the full spectrum of interpretations, looking at topics holistically and not solely through the curatorial lens. Panels should propose discussions acknowledging the community curators serve. Speakers from for-profit and non-profit sectors are welcome and are not limited to the visual arts sector.

The Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC) hosts an annual Art Curators Conference, attracting over 400 curators and guests from around the world. It is the only conference of its kind where curators from every discipline and field meet to discuss important issues facing the profession. The multi-day event includes mentorship opportunities, networking, professional development workshops, panel discussions, receptions, award announcements, receptions at host city cultural institutions, and a full membership meeting.

The Conference, open to all AAMC members and invited guests, fosters the profession's cohesiveness by addressing issues of national relevance, by assisting in professional development, and by promoting dialogue and exchange among curators.
