AAMC Awards for Excellence in 2013

Call for Nominations

The Board of Trustees and the Prize Committee of the Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC) encourage members to submit nominations now for the following two categories of prizes to be awarded to AAMC Members in recognition of 1) distinguished publications and 2) distinguished exhibitions/installations produced in North American art museums in 2013.

Acting on a recommendation from a special prize committee task force, the Board of Trustees approved a structural change to the AAMC Awards for Excellence this past summer. Both categories of awards will now be subdivided based on museum operating budget:

Museums with an operating budget up to $4 million

Museums with an operating budget between $4 and $20 million

Museums with an operating budget over $20 million

 

Beginning this year, all AAMC awards will be based on the above operating budget model and will be juried.  The only exception is the award for outstanding essay/extended catalogue entry, which will continue to be juried without regard to museum operating budget.  Also note that the nominations process has changed, including the materials required for any award nomination.

PUBLICATION AWARDS:

Notes: 
Catalogue nominations, which include BOTH exhibition and permanent collection publications in a single category, will be adjudicated according to museum operating budget (categories defined above).  A separate jury of four curators, drawn from the AAMC membership, will be assigned to each operating budget category.  When submitting a nomination, a budget category must be assigned.

Catalogue essays submitted for review in the above category may be by a contributing author or the primary author of the publication (primary authors are also qualified to be nominated in the outstanding catalogue category above). 

EXHIBITION AWARDS (JURIED BY THE AAMC PRIZE COMMITTEE):

1. Outstanding Exhibition/Installation of 2013 in a museum with an operating budget of up to $4 million

2. Outstanding Exhibition/Installation of 2013 in a museum with an operating budget of between $4 and $20 million

3. Outstanding Exhibition/Installation of 2013 in a museum with an operating budget of over $20 million

Key exhibition/installation nominations considerations:

2.  Exhibitions must have opened to the public within the calendar year 2013.  If an exhibition bridges 2014, it is still eligible for nomination in the 2013 category.

Juries will meet in March, 2014 to select winners.  Finalists and winners will be notified in late March/early April.
