Description

What exactly does "community engagement" mean in art museums? And for art curators? As museums seek to diversify and expand audiences, what role might our work on exhibitions and collections play? This webinar will tackle how to develop community engagement projects as part of exhibition planning, co-creating with the audience, developing partnerships that result in mutually beneficial and scaleable projects, measuring success, collaborating with educators, and building new discourses around non-contemporary collections. Examples from museums of varying sizes and resources will be discussed so as to offer curators a range of models to consider.

The webinar was moderated by Beth Citron, Rubin Museum of Art, and Marina Pacini, Memphis Brooks Museum of Art; panelists are Elisabeth Callihan, Head of Multi-Generational Learning, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and Christine Starkman, Curator of Asian Art, Ancient to Contemporary, Museum of Fine Art, Houston.

Beth Citron, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rubin Museum

Beth Citron is the Curator for Modern and Contemporary Art at the Rubin Museum in New York. In 2014 she organized "Francesco Clemente: Inspired by India" and "Witness at a Crossroads: Photographer Marc Riboud in Asia." For the museum, she also organized a three-part exhibition series "Modernist Art from India" (2011-13) and, with Rahaab Allana of the Alkazi Foundation, co-organized "Allegory and Illusion: Early Portrait Photography from South Asia" (2013). She has contributed to Artforum, ArtIndia, and other publications, and published "Bhupen Khakhar's 'Pop' in India, 1970-72" in the Summer 2012 issue of ArtJournal. She completed a Ph.D. on Contemporary Art in Bombay, 1965-1995 in the History of Art Department at the University of Pennsylvania in 2009, and has taught in the Art History Department at New York University, from which she also earned a B.A. in Fine Arts.


Elisabeth Callihan, Head, Multi-Generational Learning, Minneapolis Institute of Arts

Elisabeth Callihan is the Head of Multi-Generational Learning at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, where she leads a team that develops innovative, audience-centered programs connecting communities with the museum’s collections. Before coming to the MIA, she served as the Manager of Adult Programs at the Brooklyn Museum, where she was responsible for an expansive portfolio of exhibition-based programming, including the community-driven Target First Saturday series. Prior to that role, she served as Manager of Public Programs and Public Relations at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. She holds a BA in Art History from the University of Evansville; an MA in Fine and Decorative Art from Sotheby’s Institute London; and a certificate in French Language & Culture from the Institut Catholique in Paris.


Marina Pacini, Chief Curator and Curator of American, Modern and Contemporary Art, Memphis Brooks Museum of Art; AAMC Board of Trustees

Marina Pacini is Chief Curator and Curator of American, Modern and Contemporary Art at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. Among the exhibitions she has curated are Photographs from the Memphis World, 1949-1964; Stonework: William Edmondson; and Marisol: Sculptures and Works on Paper. Her current project is a Red Grooms exhibition planned for the museum’s centennial. Before joining the Brooks in 2001, she was director of the Clough-Hanson Gallery at Rhodes College, Memphis, and Philadelphia Project Director for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. She serves on the board of the Association of Art Museum Curators and is board chair of the UrbanArt Commission. Her BA in art history is from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and her MA in art history is from the University of Delaware.


Christine Starkman, Curator of Asian Art, Ancient to Contemporary, The Museum of Fine Art, Houston

Christine Starkman is the Curator of Asian Art, Ancient to Contemporary Art, at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston since 2000. She has organized over a dozen high profile loans and exhibitions from Korea, India, Japan, and China. She conceived and developed the newly dedicated galleries for Asia (Arts of Korea 2007 , Arts of India 2009, Arts of China 2010, and Arts of Japan 2012). She is a successful fundraiser and has developed a strong relationship with the diverse Asian communities in Houston. She is a published author and continues to develop writing projects with contemporary artists.
