November 5, 2020, NEW YORK, NY — The Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC), the leading organization for nonprofit art curators, announced today it has established new categories for the Awards for Excellence, their esteemed program celebrating curatorial work. Highly respected, these are the only peer to peer Awards that recognize achievements of nonprofit curators working in any field anywhere in the world. Nominations are now being accepted for this year’s Awards that will recognize curatorial endeavors created solely for the online sphere in the categories of:
“It is important that we honor the curatorial work taking place virtually this year,” noted Judith Pineiro, Executive Director, AAMC & AAMC Foundation, “Over the past ten months, the way curators have embraced digital as a way to continue outreach and also change the historical narrative prevalent in our collections should be honored by the Association of Art Museum Curators.” During the ongoing pandemic, AAMC has nimbly and successfully adjusted programming to serve the field’s needs at this time, including moving their 2020 and 2021 Art Curators Conference virtually; hosting curator only gatherings; expanding webinars, as well as partnership events; launching a resource filled YouTube channel for all past programs; and establishing a Code of Conduct for curators. It is important for the organization that it makes a shift in its Awards as well.
The AAMC is specifically seeking nominations that fostered engagement between nonprofit art organizations and its communities and addressed issues in social justice, activism, diversity, equity, and inclusion. The peer jurors will vet the nominations with these key aspects at the forefront of their consideration. Nominations are being accepted through December 21, 2020. For the past sixteen years, the Awards have been dedicated to recognizing distinctive curatorial nonprofit work, in all fields, time periods, and types of organization affiliation, including independent and have recognized over 141 curators. In order to be considered, all curatorial content must be original and launched, established, published, or hosted between January 1, 2020 and December 15, 2020. All entries must be accessible and/or recorded to be nominated. Next year, AAMC’s Awards for Excellence will include traditional categories of exhibitions and catalogues, and may also continue the new additions this year.
Awards will be announced in late April, during the Art Curators Conference.
